Speaking Testimonials

Timothy J. Boyce speaking at a book signing event in Charlotte, NC.

I want to thank Tim Boyce for this–there’s really no words to describe how moving that story is. It would be lost to history if people like Tim Boyce did not devote the effort and time and expense–a good part of his life–to preserve the Odd Nansen story. It is a moving and gripping story.

– Hon. Richard Blumenthal
United States Senator
State of Connecticut

Tim Boyce was the perfect speaker, and delivered a fantastically engaging presentation about an incredibly moving human story. Among the 150 programs we produce each year, this one stood out.

A resounding thank you for the program you brought us last evening about Odd Nansen, his life, diary and journey. His story is truly remarkable, as was your heartfelt delivery, which at times moved many of us to tears. If one were to devote years of one’s life to researching, memorializing and promoting a life story, I can’t think of one more deserving, or appropriate for our time in history than this one.

[We] were privileged to have Timothy Boyce as a guest speaker for our annual Yom HaShoah program. More than 160 people listened as Tim spoke so eloquently about Odd Nansen. We were in awe as Tim described events in the life of Odd Nansen before, during and after World War II. We were moved by [Nansen’s] love of his family and his humanity, and were astounded by his bravery – recording the horrors of captivity in his secret diary and in saving the life of young Tom Buergenthal in Sachsenhausen. . . . We are so grateful that Tim Boyce has made it his mission to tell the little known story of Odd Nansen’s secret diary and to get it republished so the truth of the Holocaust is told.

I just now finished reading From Day to Day. . . . Once I was able to begin reading it I could scarcely put it down. . . . From Day to Day has illustrated in stark detail aspects of human nature that no other book, documentary, or movie has ever done. Thank you for your work to bring Odd Nansen’s daily personal account of one of human history’s darkest periods back to life, which must never be forgotten.

From Day to Day: One Man’s Diary of Survival in Nazi Concentration Camps

Hailed by The New Yorker as “among the most compelling documents to come out of the war,” From Day to Day is a World War II concentration camp diary—one of only a handful ever translated into English—secretly written by Odd Nansen, a Norwegian political prisoner. Arrested in January 1942, Nansen, son of polar explorer and humanitarian Fridtjof Nansen (Nobel Peace Prize 1922) was held captive for the duration of the war in various Nazi camps in Norway and Germany.

Nansen’s diary entries detail his palpable longing for his wife and family, his constantly frustrated hopes for release, the quiet strength and sometimes ugly prejudices of his fellow prisoners, and his horror at the especially barbaric treatment reserved for the Jews. The diary brilliantly illuminates Nansen’s daily struggle, not only to survive, but to preserve his sanity and maintain his humanity in a world engulfed by fear and hate.

First published in English in 1949, From Day to Day had been out of print for almost seventy years. The new edition contains entries and sketches never previously available in English. It also features a new introduction and extensive annotations by Timothy Boyce and a preface by Thomas Buergenthal, whose life (as a ten year-old) Nansen saved while in Sachsenhausen, later recounted in his own memoir A Lucky Child: A Memoir of Surviving Auschwitz as a Young Boy.
